Drought

Essay by Jelena Anderson

For several days now, there has been something tugging at the back of my mind concerning this current drought we are experiencing here in Alabama and other parts of the country. It made me think about the prophet Elijah and the 3 year drought the land experienced at that time.

So, finally, I decided to reread the story in 1 Kings 17-18.

It was the time that Israel was ruled by King Ahab and his wife Jezebel. Interestingly enough, we currently have a woman running for office who frequently has been compared to Jezebel; and of whom has been said that she has a Jezebel Spirit.

Jezebel had all the prophets of the Lord killed except Elijah, who had been in hiding for a long period of time. In effect, Jezebel had been trying to silence the voice of God on earth to push her own agenda.

In America, we have been watching the silencing of the church for years. Some church leaders are afraid to speak out in fear that the government will go after them. We see pastors being told to turn over their sermons before preaching them; thus the government is effectively trying to silence anything they don’t want to be preached, like a so called “anti-gay agenda” and so on.

The ancient Israelites sacrificed their children to Baal. It is believed that the children were still alive when they were thrown into the fire and that the Israelites played the drums, danced, and sang loudly in order to drown out the screams of their dying children.

We on the other hand have allowed the murder of our most innocent:  our unborn. Those that never stood a chance, that never had a voice, are being ripped apart in the womb and we call that “humane”. We don’t even want to make the mother look at an ultrasound to see the baby before she makes her decision because that is just cruel!

As a church we have gone into hiding. We have stopped defending the innocent, we have stopped lending our voice to those who have none. It is time for us to come back out into the open again.

When God told Elijah to come back out of hiding, he confronted the people of Israel in 1 King 18:21:

“Elijah approached the people and said, “How long will you not decide between two choices? If the Lord is the true God, follow him, but if Baal is the true God, follow him!” But the people said nothing.”

Sounds an awful lot like what we’re dealing with in our own nation right now. We have to make a choice between two sides. And while the presidential election will come to an end next Tuesday, this is a choice about more than just who we think ought to run the country for the next four years.

Our identity as a nation is at stake; and even more so, our identity as a Christian nation! Whether you like the candidates running for office or not doesn’t make a difference. It is not about their personality. It is about what they stand for.

On the one hand you have Trump, who has been speaking out in favor of Christianity and the Freedom of Speech. He stands for Christian values; and yes, I understand how crude his behavior is at times but just think back to when you were a baby Christian and then get over it. How he talks is not near as offensive as the things Hillary does. Look at the picks for the Supreme Court and how that will affect our nation for generations to come.

On the other hand you have Hillary, who stands for corruption; for the liberal agenda that has no room for Christian values or principles. She stands for the false gods and idols, money and power; she stands for bigger government and lining their own pockets; she stands for the people relying on the government to make decisions for them and to be dictated how to live their lives. She stands for the killing of our innocent as she advocates that an unborn baby has no rights; not even the right to live, hours before delivery. She stands for the mocking of God and the breaking of the first covenant, the marriage between a man and a woman. It was Hillary Clinton who said that deep-seated religious beliefs had to be changed.

There is no freedom in that. There is no life in that.

America is suffering from a flagging religious spirit as well as a spirit of deception; to the point that even many leaders in church are too blind to see the blatant and obvious truth.

This is a time like none other. We have come to the fork in the road and it is time that we make a decision. “If the Lord is the true God, follow him, but if Baal is the true God, follow him!”

We can no longer stand idly by and watch the destruction of our country! Too long have we been going down the wrong path and it is time that we fight back, that we stop hiding and denying the Truth.

You can’t sit this one out because you don’t like the choices. We, the people of America, are the reason why we are left with these choices because in recent years our voices were not loud enough. Too often did we turn a blind eye. Too often did we not speak up. Too often did we allow ourselves to be deceived.

More  than the drought our land has been suffering from, we have also been in a spiritual drought; but revival is coming, and in some places has already started. The outpouring of God’s Holy Spirit upon our nation will once again happen, and it will be greater than we have ever experienced before.

It starts with the sound of rain in the spirit, before we can see a small cloud, the size of a human fist, that will soon turn into a heavy rain! (see 1 Kings 18:44-45).

It starts with you!
