North Korean Ship With Missile Materials Intercepted At Panama Canal

Yesterday, Panama’s President Ricardo Martinelli said Panamanian Authorities intercepted a North Korean flagged ship that was suspected of the attempted smuggling of “sophisticated missile components”. He was quoted as saying, “The world needs to sit up and take note: you cannot go around shipping undeclared weapons of war through the Panama Canal.”

Martinelli claimed the vessel was coming FROM Cuba, heading TO North Korea. Initially, authorities suspected drugs were aboard and ordered the vessel to be boarded and searched.

“When we started to unload the shipment of sugar we located containers that we believe to be sophisticated missile equipment, and that is not allowed,” Martinelli said

According to President Martinelli, the ship’s captain attempted to commit suicide and the crew rioted during the boarding.
