Toto, I Don’t Think We’re In Kansas Anymore

Chris Tucker

The world is an ugly place, these days; Earthquakes, famine, drought, wars. All around the world, people are being displaced from their homes and in some cases their country. If you listen to the mainstream media, you’re left thinking that the only immigration problems we face are coming from Mexico and Central America. That’s just not the case, though.

The reality is that we have people coming into this country from all around the globe for a myriad of reasons. Not every immigrant is running from the drug cartels and not every immigrant comes here to make a “better” life for themselves. Some are coming here so that they can have a life…PERIOD…

Enter Wichita school district, Wichita, Kansas.

In just this one school district, there are 350 students from other countries that speak EIGHTY-ONE different languages. For those of you in New York, LA and other foreign parts, that may not seem like a big deal. But this is WICHITA KANSAS for Pete’s sake…Smack dab in the center of this great nation…I know, I know, I’m just bein’ naive but when I read that a school system has to hire an interpreter service FOR EIGHTY-ONE DIFFERENT LANGUAGES just to be able to communicate or…you know…TEACH…Well, my minds a little blown, that’s all.

I expect this kind of thing in Chicago or San Fran but not in Wichita, Kansas. I didn’t think they were completely homogeneous but I didn’t think it was a hotspot for Urdu, either…Or the entire “Chinese family of languages”…Or Bengali??? Bengali? Really???

Just…Wow…Don’t take my word for it. Go HERE and read this article from FoxNews Latino…It’s fascinatin’ stuff…Really
