Virginia’s Republican Governor under FBI Scrutiny
Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell’s relationship to a major campaign donor is being investigated by the FBI for possible quid pro quo dealings, according to this story in WaPo.
Bob McDonnell’s name has been floated around as a possible Republican Presidential candidate, and this probe could possibly taint that campaign. Agents of the FBI spoke to WaPo:
“Among the topics being explored, they said, is the $15,000 catering bill that Williams paid for the 2011 wedding of McDonnell’s daughter at Virginia’s historic Executive Mansion. But questions have extended to other, previously undisclosed gifts from Williams to Maureen McDonnell as well, they said.”
The story is complex, and developing, but so far nothing has come to light that violates any of Virginia’s campaign finance laws. Allegations of this sort, however, could give the GOP pause when 2016 rolls around.
The Honest Answer hasn’t taken much notice of Bob McDonnell as a potential Presidential candidate, but others have. This page will continue to monitor the story, because if any of the charges of financial impropriety actually stick, we will know that we’ve been looking at crony capitalism, and will respond accordingly. Marty, Tina, and I are free-market sorts, and regard the crony stuff as being every bit as harmful as the worst of Progressivism.
