Which Candidate Will Put God First?
Which Candidate Will Put God First?
Essay by Jelena Anderson
As many of you on Wednesday night, I, too, sat down and watched the GOP debate on CNN. There were times when I scratched my head in disbelief and anger; at points my jaw dropped and at other times I laughed out loud, thinking I was watching a comedy club instead of presidential candidates debating hot topics.
I honestly couldn’t tell you at this point who I would vote for IF I got to vote. But since I am a legal immigrant and not yet a citizen, I don’t have that right. I have to depend on you guys to make a good decision.
So who would be a good president?
Trump, with his non-apologetic ways?
Maybe. I mean, it most certainly is time that we quit bowing down to our enemies.
What about Cruz or Rubio? They make some good points. So does Carson. But they also make some points that I don’t agree with, just like every single other candidate.
Over the past seven years I’ve heard many people talk about how awful Obama is, and people even call him the Anti-Christ; and while I can see their point, let’s not give the man more credit than he deserves.
Here is the thing though: if God knew everything Obama was going to do to this country, why did He allow him to become president? Surely God could’ve fixed that.
What if America needed this wakeup call though? What if this nation had been too far gone already, going along with all the little subtle changes that pulled us away from God one inch at a time?
Maybe the only way our eyes could be opened was to allow Obama into office and make so many drastic changes that we simply couldn’t stay silent any longer?
The Bible tells us that we are supposed to obey the law of the land and follow those who are in authority.
Submission to the Authorities
13 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, 4 for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience. Romans 13:1-5
Sounds a little contradictory to me, when I look at everything our current president has put us through, BUT I do believe in God’s word.
Here is the thing: God is still on the throne, so God is still in control! If He allowed this to happen, then there is a reason. Maybe we will never understand that reason, but we know that we can trust God so let’s do that and pray FOR our leaders – whoever they may be.
Bringing this back to the GOP candidates:
I’m a firm believer of Matthew 6:33 “Seek first the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.” (NLT)
I know that we have very important and urgent issues in the country and also around the world that need to be addressed as soon as possible; and most of these issues are things that separate one candidate from another.
I can’t tell you who to pick; nor do I want to have that kind of responsibility, but if I could vote, I would vote for whoever is going to put God first.
If our future president will seek God’s Kingdom first, I believe that all other issues will be worked out for our good. How? I don’t know, but luckily I am not the one who has to figure that out. That’s God’s job, and just like He is doing exactly that in our daily lives, He will also do it for our country.
I believe that a Christian president who puts God above all else will deal with issues like Planned Parenthood, gay marriage, foreign policies and whatever else needs to be handled, in a Godly way.
So let’s pray and ask God to show us the candidate that will put God back where He belongs – above all things that concern us. It should be His counsel our leaders seek before considering any plan of action. It should be God’s way and according to His will; the way we take care of things in our country and around the world.
If we do that, (put God first) I believe this nation will find its way again and will once again be a prosperous and blessed nation under God, because His word says:
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves , and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicle 7:14 KJV).
